How to Create Magic through Teaching Intensive Literacy: An Examination of How the Keys to Teaching Text/s Are Always Embedded Within the Original Text
This session will provide teachers with magical approaches of how to scrutinize pieces of reading, one would provide their class. Therefore, participants will learn how to draw out text syntax, which are the keys to teaching and extending word patterns, meaning, and even grammar, which should not be taught in isolation. With this approach, educators will be able to supply their students with a fully intensive literacy learning environment that naturally lends to the components of foundational, content, diversity, and engagement strategies for literary and informational texts.

THIS SESSION WILL BE OFFERED AGAIN: TUESDAY, 9:30-10:20

Improve Early Literacy Development with Hands-On Activities and Smart Using of Materials
Research show that children learn better when they are engaged in hands-on activities. This study explores how the children's early literacy development is impacted by the hands-on activities and smart using of materials. Latour’s Actor Network Theory was used to frame a discussion about how the hands-on activities and teaching materials influence teachers’ practices, students’ literacy learning, and the interaction between teachers and students. Many lessons the teachers reflected on were undermined by difficulties they ran into with the materials they employed in the classroom. The uncertain and unpredictable characteristics of classrooms require the teachers to develop the ability to make quick decisions, allocating attention to multiple tasks, designing attractive activities, smart using of manipulatives, and adjusting quickly to the changing circumstances.

Word Attack/Word Solving Strategies
This session will engage participants in teaching children how to use strategies to read unknown or “tricky” words. If students struggle to read individual words, they lack a pathway to comprehension. By equipping students with word attack strategies, they are enabled to decode with less effort which ultimately leads to improvement both in reading fluency and comprehension.

Thinking on their own - the power of independent reading and readers’ notebooks
Have you ever wondered, “How can I get my students to independently read and comprehend texts at the level I know they are capable of? How do I teach my students to independently read, think, and write about texts at the level demanded by our standards - even when I’m not there to support them?”

In this session educators will learn about the power of a Reader’s Notebook and how it supports students in comprehending independently read texts. The Reader’s Notebook is part of a carefully structured literacy block where even the youngest learners are independently reading and responding to self-selected texts. An overview of how to use Readers’ Notebooks as an instructional strategy will be provided, as well as authentic student examples and resources. This session is appropriate for K-5 educators who are looking for ways to develop student independence in reading, thinking and writing about texts in authentic and meaningful ways.

Vocabulary Enactments: A Key to Unlocking Meaning
Students of all ages can develop facility in learning vocabulary using various text sources through the use of vocabulary enactments. Enacting vocabulary words can offer children access to understanding powerful ideas and can help them bridge the language in the texts to make real-worlds connections. At the same time teachers can extend learning by having their students participate in literacy processes, such as discussion, storytelling, retelling, and purposeful writing that support the use of the vocabulary in context. In this session the presenters will first demonstrate and then engage the audience participants in activities that will support teaching targeted vocabulary taken from four texts. Using different genres, a demonstration of enactment strategies will occur through storytelling, song and movement to support authentic integration of literacy processes. Additional follow-up literacy strategies appropriate for classroom use will be presented to extend comprehension of the vocabulary words introduced.

The Heart of the Matter: Facilitating the Magic of Literacy among English Language Learners
There is a saying that goes, “The heart of the matter is a matter of the heart.” The connection between this saying and the challenges faced by teachers dealing with students from different linguistic (and cultural) backgrounds will be the center of this presentation. At the beginning of the session, participants will take on the position of “the other” and evaluate their attitudes and dispositions related to working with English Language Learners. This will be followed by presentation of research-based information on these group of learners in today’s classrooms in the US, which will be supported by real-life stories. Specific strategies will also be discussed and/or modeled throughout the session. Towards the end, participants will collaboratively generate different measures to effectively open the magic of, and through, literacy for the ELLs.

A Picture Paints A Thousand Words
Just as an artist paints a picture with a brush, a writer paints a picture with words. In order for students to be literate today, they must be able to manage texts in many forms. In this session you will encounter new and inventive techniques to inspire your students to use images to help them to reveal layers of meaning in all types of reading including picture and chapter books, content area literature, images, poetry, and even informational text. Discover how to engage all of your students, no matter what their reading levels may be, in practicing authentic meaning-making. High-quality literature can provide an access point into engaging instruction that exemplifies how to use comprehension strategies, develop core knowledge and expand your students’ vision of the world. All students deserve rich literacy experiences that embody excellence and equity. In this session will use Trevor Bryan’s The Art of Comprehension ‘Access Lenses’ to help unlock your students’ full potential and Dr. Jan Richardson’s Seven Steps for Selecting High-Quality Picture Books to help all students connect and expand their knowledge of different cultures, experiences and concepts found in other content areas.

Literacy Workstations: the Magic is in the Details
Students in our classrooms vary greatly in their literacy needs and ability levels. As a result, it is necessary to provide multiple opportunities for students to read, write, participate in meaningful experiences, and collaborate with others so that they can develop their ability to read and comprehend text(s). One structure that can support these varied needs is the use of effective literacy workstations.

This can sometimes be an overwhelming task for educators with everything else we are expected to do in our daily teaching lives. This session will share tried and true practices from three educators who love literacy workstations and the opportunities they provide for students. Participants will leave this session with a set of online resources to use right away. Our secret? The magic of workstations is in the details- organization, management, and authentic tasks that do not require hours of prep time or empty your wallet.

The Magic of Words: Intentional Vocabulary Instruction
Readers, writers, and thinkers unite! Comprehension hinges on a strong vocabulary. Recent studies have shown that vocabulary is THE strongest predictor of achievement in comprehension (Gunning, 2018). Educators need to examine carefully the time and strategies used during intentional vocabulary instruction. This focus on vocabulary and academic language supports reading and writing in all content areas, concept development, and confidence as a learner.
This interactive session demonstrates numerous doable and effective ways to teach vocabulary and academic language in pre-K-3rd grade classrooms. All content is clearly linked to state standards. Participants will walk away with fresh and engaging methods of teaching this component of comprehensive English/language arts.

Why Kindergarten has Become the New First Grade and Why This is not a Good Idea! First Grade and Why this is not a Good Idea
Kindergarten has become increasingly more focused on academic studies and less on exploration, social skill development, and play. This dramatic change in kindergarten is due to the “push-down effect” (aka the accountability shove-down) as academic content in all grades is being ramped up, making preschool the new kindergarten, kindergarten the new first grade, and so on. This has broad and oftentimes negative implications on the traditional kindergarten model that may create failure and anxiety in young children. This presentation will highlight the traditional kindergarten philosophy, the present state of kindergarten and the pressures on schools, teachers, parents and students to prepare children for mastery of literacy curriculums that do not match their cognitive and emotional levels of development. The presentation concludes with strategies teachers can implement to counter these changes
