SESSION CANCELLED: Finding the Sweet Spot: Balancing Time, Rigor, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice with Specific Standards through Excerpts of Children’s Literature

We fight the same daily battles. How can we focus on the big goals (promoting social skills and social justice, promoting academic skills of analysis and love of literature, making lessons relevant and engaging and meeting standards, helping all students feel safe and able to succeed and offering rich on and above grade level opportunities) and the explicit, written goals (multiple specific standards that balance surface and deeper issues in texts, deep processing of literature, time to include writing, speaking, listening, and reading)?
Teachers create great lessons and units everyday. In this session teachers will be provided with my examples built around excerpts of children’s titles that may serve them as a model for integrating many of the demands of teaching. Teachers will see specific integrated, engaging assignments that model the thinking of competent readers, scaffold the demands for students who need support, and extend the thinking and learning for all.
