Teaching for Transfer: Building Real-World Connections

This presentation will focus on effective pathways from awareness to transfer by encouraging diverse learners to participate in constructive academic conversations. Participants will examine ways to adapt lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners by providing purposeful modeling by the teacher, as well as language, vocabulary, and content-area supports for maximizing the quality of students’ discussions. Emphasis will be placed on responding to students’ needs and supporting students’ habits, skills, and ideas to promote critical thinking.
Participants will work with partners or in small groups to discuss and plan appropriate ways to model and guide students toward constructive conversations about content-area topics. The presentation will also include opportunities for participants to design lessons that foster the transfer of targeted skills and strategies, as well as critical thinking.
